Position: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) – Onsite Classroom, Early Intervention Program (EIP) and/or Itinerant

Classification: Full-time or Part-time, Exempt, Salaried (hours are dependent on organizational needs)

Reports To: Director of Student Services, Director of Therapy & Early Intervention Services and/or Director of Vision Services

Summary/Objective

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) will work collaboratively with children, families and other service providers to ensure instruction and strategies to increase independence and to provide a comprehensive and individualized education to each child based on their visual impairment. Additionally, the TVI will provide direct instruction in vision-specific goals areas (Expanded Core Curriculum - ECC, Braille, &/or Technology) as set by the IEP or IFSP. TVI’s will provide instructional opportunities across all developmental domains to support IEP/IFSP student goals as well as the general curriculum. This position may have reporting responsibility to a direct manager and dotted line responsibility to other managers within Program staff.

Leadership Responsibilities

·         Ability to guide and direct the tasks and duties of the Teaching Assistants, and to provide mentorship and coaching

·         Ability to coach and support interns and/or individuals working as student teachers

·         Manage daily schedule to maximize efficiency & benefit to children

·         Supports the Vision and Mission of CCVI by actively participating in building committee work

Essential Functions

·         Prepares daily lesson plans and adapts materials for each child based on individual needs and abilities.

·         Understand educational implications of visual impairments and implement strategies within area of specialty

·         Implement interventions and strategies with all children, including those with multiple disabilities and CVI

·         Responsible for the care and safety of each child across all CCVI related settings.

·         Directs the tasks and duties for classroom, teaching assistants, and volunteers.

·         Serves as the case manager for assigned students.

·         Participates in the development of IFSP &/or IEP with appropriate goals and objectives.

·         Completes Functional Vision Evaluation (FVE), cumulative student, and Learning Media Assessments (LMA) when needed and Assistive Technology evaluations and updates annually. May update the OREGON project annually.

·         Use a variety of assessment tools for students of CVI to plan and implement strategies.

·         Maintains the individual teacher files on each child enrolled.

·         Ensure cumulative student files are updated at a minimum of quarterly for each child.

·         Communicates directly with family through daily journaling, as well as telephone, email, and other methods as needed.

·         Communicates and collaborates with each child’s team as needed.

·         Assesses functional vision of children.

·         Completes all reports in a timely manner.

·         Researches and educates self with regard to current educational trends and new developments in the field of special education and visual impairment.

·         Partners and helps educate families and other external stakeholders.

·         Partners with district staff to follow and meet all special education timelines.

·         Provides a multimodal approach to therapy within the context of the home, community, center-based educational setting according to the child’s IFSP, IEP, Goal Plan, or Service Plan.

·          Makes referrals to other providers, both within the agency and interagency, when needed.

·         Attends staff meetings, team meetings, student meetings, in-service activities and professional development.

·         Use Conscious Discipline language, strategies, and actions.

·         Ensure children/students on caseload are included on annual American Printing House for the Blind (APH) census.

·         Takes student data weekly to inform lesson plans and instruction.

·         Implements Assistive Technology to support instruction.

Responsibilities of Early Intervention Program and MOVE Itinerant Staff:

·         Manages scheduling of visits for assigned caseload.

·         Conducts covisits per IFSP authorizations.

·         Conducts assessments and evaluations as assigned.

·         Completes necessary documentation and billing requirements in a timely manner per policy and according to deadlines set by finance.

·         Collaborates with external providers, coordinators and case managers for the best interests of the child.

·         Compliance with expectations of external partners.

Work Environment

·         Office(s), family homes, &/or classroom. No extreme temperatures

Physical demands

·         Frequent sitting, standing, and walking, including the use of floor seating, child-size chairs, stools, etc.

·         Frequent and repetitive lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of students.

·         Frequent and repetitive reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.

·         Ability to lift students as follows:

o    Students weighing 0–35 lbs: 1 adult transfer

o    Students weighing 35–60 lbs: 2 adult transfer

o    Students weighing 60+ lbs: mechanical lift or 3-person transfer

Travel Required

·         Outside the Kansas City metropolitan area - less than 50%

·         Some itinerant and EIP teachers may be required to drive to locations outside the KC metro area.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in the field of early childhood special education or special education
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired certification
  • Missouri teaching certification in Blind and Partially Sighted and other related areas

Preferred Education and Experience

·         Master’s degree from an accredited university in the field of special education or visual disabilities

·         Orientation and Mobility certification preferred

·         Experience working with children with visual impairments

·         Experience working with early childhood regular or special education classroom TVI’s

·         Experience with Expanded Core Curriculum

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Proficiency in a variety of assistive technology
  • Proficiency with vision specific technologies such as JAWS, Perky Duck, Duxbury, Braille embossing/transcribing, ZoomText
